Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
