No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
