EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
