The former US president’s most recent threat to enforce an extra complete levy on products from China has been called a “typical example” of US double standards, as stated by the China’s leadership.

A representative of the ministry further commented that China could enact its own undisclosed “countermeasures” if the White House occupant follows through on his warning, noting that the country was “not afraid” of a looming commercial battle.

Last Friday, Donald Trump retaliated at Beijing’s move to reinforce its regulations for exports of rare earths, alleging China of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “hostage”.

He also warned to cancel a planned meeting with Chinese leader Xi, which was set for a conference in Seoul later this month.

The former president’s remarks on that day unsettled global markets, with the S&P 500 share index closing down nearly three percent, marking its steepest fall since earlier this year.

His comments revived fears of a trade war between the United States and China.

Earlier this year, the respective governments had consented to drop triple-digit tariffs on each other’s products, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the two countries.

Consequently, American import duties on Chinese imports facing an additional 30% levy compared with the year’s onset, while US goods entering the country are subject to a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – published by the relevant government department in the manner of written responses to press queries – mirrored terminology from the zenith of the recent trade conflict.

The remarks condemned US export restrictions on electronic components while supporting China’s own restrictions on exports on key elements as “normal actions” to protect domestic safety and that of every country.

The official remarked that for “an extended period”, the America had “broadened the definition” of domestic safety, misused overseas sale restrictions and “adopted discriminatory practices against Beijing.

“Resorting to import duty warnings is not the proper method to engage with Beijing,” their representative stated.

“Beijing’s stance” on a trade conflict has always been steady: we do not want one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Recently, the Chinese government revealed it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and other materials essential to high-technology production.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the state handles about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are employed in items such as renewable energy components and handheld devices.

New remarks from both governments are being viewed by some as a means of bolstering negotiating stances ahead of future trade talks.

Is not yet known whether a talks between the former president and China’s leader, expected at a conference in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will still proceed.
